The Romer Waikiki can make for a good base when exploring Waikiki. Nestled on a busy corner of the west end, this is where the road splits into the posh, beach side Kalakaua Ave and the more city-centric Kuhio Ave. You’re walking distance a lot of shopping and food options, and about a 15-minute walk to the beach. Not much in the views department, but a multi-million dollar renovation in 2023 has brought this hotel into more than utilitarian place to sleep. Making old properties feel new again is a key strategy in this area, and the Romer is an example of how it can be done right.
Updates to the entire property give it a hip, trendy feel—it’s visible from the chic lounge and café areas to the modern, minimalist room designs. The pool deck is small, but its abundance of cabanas, frequent live music and third floor location overlooking the street gives it an exclusive feel. This place is popular with groups and the range of room layouts (including some with bunkbeds) make it a decent option for all types of visitors, from families to friends to groups. All rooms have lanais though any with a (partial) ocean view have high cement railings—the Ewa Tower room lanais are more open but the “neighborhood” views are less desirable. The age of the property still shows in some areas, such as the cement block hallways, but overall it feels clean and embraces a fun, Waikiki vibe without feeling pretentious. Rooms are 400 sq. ft., suites are 600–1,215 sq. ft.
